How to draw a heart in three easy steps
First, let's see how you could draw a simple heart with basic effects in just three easy steps. Don't worry! You can learn more about this lesson and have access to all steps here. First, we need to sketch two large oval shapes and a triangle. Then, you can add colors and a gradient effect. Finally, just add some shadows and reflections to end up with a nice classic version of a heart.
Had fun drawing this cute illustration? Let's see how we can make this subject even more interesting using a few simple variations that are easy to implement.
Playing with the shape of the cartoon heart
Remember that a heart doesn't have to be symmetrical or drawn using perfect shapes. You can also play with perspective, proportions or even make the bottom much larger than the top. Possibilities are endless. Just be creative and draw anything you like ... as long as the heart is still easy to read and recognizable.
Outlines and colors don't need to be perfectly aligned
This simple tip is one of my favorites. Yep ... the shape of the subject and the strokes used to define this one can look slightly different. This technique is very easy to use and when done properly, results are visually appealing and fun to look at.
you can also apply textures inside the subject
Why add plain colors (pretty boring) when you can add cool textures inside your heart? Of course, not all textures are appropriated, but it can be a good idea to experiment with a few of them and see how it goes. It's easy to get lost using this technique, so just remember to keep it simple.
3D shapes can also be a good alternative
All three images below are now featuring a cool 3D aspect. It can be difficult to draw a 3D object using only pencils or markers, but fortunately it's quite easy to do using a vector application. In fact, there is not much to do except select the shape and play with it. Pretty cool, don't you think?
Simple and minimalist can also be nice
Here is something quite different. In this example, no colors were used. Only simply lines that are pointed on both ends. This technique is also very easy to apply and can produce wonderful result when use wisely. Remember that simple illustrations are usually harder to achieved. Why? Simply because mistakes are easier to notice!
Create, mix things and enjoy!
It's now time for you to experiment how to draw a heart using cool effects like the ones we just tried. Don't hesitate to mix a few of these techniques together. However, be careful not to create a confusing image filled with too many techniques that don't work well together. Keep it simple and just let your creativity do the rest. Have fun! :)
